Beads. Masks. Costumes. King Cakes. What's not to love about the biggest street party in the country? Each year locals and visitors from around the world descent onto New Orleans for one final hurrah before Lent begins. Famous for the colorful antics of Bourbon Street on Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras is really a celebration of music, parades, picnics, floats and excitement for the whole family. Put on your costume and catch beads and trinkets from the local "krewe" parades. Maison St. Charles is one of the city's most convenient Mardi Gras New Orleans hotels.,close to the festivities but peaceful and relaxing.

  • What is the weather usually like during Mardi Gras? What should I pack?

Like the celebration itself, New Orleans weather during Mardi Gras can be unpredictable with temperatures varying from cold to very warm, even on the same day! To best prepare, plan to layer your clothes, since a chilly morning can turn into a hot afternoon. Also, since the Mardi Gras events go all day and are outdoors, comfortable shoes and clothes that you don't mind getting a bit dirty are a really good idea. Always check the forecast, since rainstorms are an unfortunate reality in the deep South. Having a raincoat handy is always a great idea!
  • Can I bring my kids to Mardi Gras?

Absolutely! Don't let the images you see on TV fool you, Mardi Gras is actually a family celebration. In fact, when you bring your children to one of the parades, be sure to bring a long a large bag to carry all the fun things - toys, stuffed animals, beads and more - they will catch from the floats. Just try and avoid Bourbon Street. The ideal place to watch the parades with your family is where they start - in the Garden District of St. Charles. Watching from here means you all are sure to see the whole parade - some of which last until well past 11:00 p.m.!
