THE STORY of the MAISON ST. CHARLES and our Neighborhood

The Glory Days of New Orleans were during the pre-Civil War era of the early and mid 1800’s.

New Orleans was one of the largest and richest cities in the young United States. The Port of the New Orleans was a bustling center of activity, with commerce from all over the world passing over the wooden wharves.

Five of the buildings that are part of the Maison St. Charles were Antebellum homes. Their high ceilings, with parlors lit by crystal chandeliers and warmed with fireplaces surrounded by original mantles, have been lovingly restored. Created from these wonderful spaces are 17 Guest Suites, each making an individual design statement worthy of its age and significance.

These buildings are recognized as historically important and are listed with the United States Department of Interior.

The three charming courtyards that serve as the focal points for the grounds of the Hotel each boast their own ambiance. Patio Parlance, named for the original owner of one of the buildings, in the setting for a beautifully landscaped pool and hot tub.

Patio Degas, named for the famed French painter who created many works of art while staying in New Orleans and Patio Renoir, named in honor of the French Impressionist, are set with sparkling fountains, native foliage and flowers, with quiet areas to sit and to reflect. It is New Orleans, yet it is the New Orleans-style of another time.

This Hotel is located in an area of New Orleans known as the Lower Garden District. It was here that many American merchants settled when they came to this thriving metropolis. While the homes become grander as one moves up St. Charles Avenue within the Garden District and beyond, this area continued to serve as a fine introduction to the American Way of Life in a city that boasted a larger aristocratic French and Spanish population.

It is here that many important New Orleans events pass by, the St. Charles Avenue Streetcar, Mardi Gras parades, and the never-ending flow of automobile traffic heading Uptown and Downtown.
